Earthquake & Sakura

Wednesday April 13th, 2011 by marie

Hi everyone, how are you doing? I just wanted to say a few words, more than one month after the earthquake and its consequences that affected all of us. But as the foreigners kept saying to their relatives overseas, except for the North of Japan of course, life came back to “normal”, as normal as it can be, given this special situation and moments Japan is experiencing

Our intense rhythm in the office continued, and we have always had a lot of work, no project cancellation, or postponement. And as most of Wedovideo’s staff has stayed in Tokyo after the earthquake, we had no consequent “labor shortages”. Daily life continued almost as usual, only shook by recurrent quakes, well-felt on the 10th floor of our building, but no worries!

The projects we have been working on are for clients from various sectors. Such as automotive industry for Mercedes in Shanghai, luxury consumer goods with Chivas’ event in China, high jewelry with Cartier, pharmaceutical industry with our long-term partner, sanofi aventis.

Life is going on, we have still many projects coming. By the way, it will be the occasion to share with you some special techniques we use, some useful tips. To come in our next posts.

As everyone noticed in Tokyo, spring is definitely here, we enjoy it, sakuras are beautiful, and we went to shoot them last Sunday:

Soccer shoot out

Friday November 12th, 2010 by marie

On Wednesday Raymond and Alex handled a shooting in a great little studio in Nakameguro. Recently we have been preparing a football-themed opening video for one of our clients’ upcoming events. It was shot on greenscreen, with a RED Camera. Well timed and well executed! We’re not looking forward to the post-production!

Mosaïc video / sanofi aventis / Shanghai World Expo 2010

Thursday May 6th, 2010 by marie

Hi everyone, I am very proud to present you a project we started more than a month ago, and that became public last saturday at the Shanghai World Expo 2010, in the French Pavilion! Through Emotion Shanghai, we got 2 video projects for sanofi aventis, one of the 3 privileged partner of the French Pavillon, with Lafarge and LVMH. For sanofi aventis the aim is to reflect its values and international action for health all around the world, in videos that will be shown during the 6 months duration of the Shanghai World Expo 2010. I will talk only about one video, the mosaïc video, the most tricky and interesting one, in terms of story board and post-production. The idea of the mosaic video came from Alain and Alex. The aim was to show 16 persons from different countries, interacting with their “webcam neighbors”, passing from one screen to an other fruits, sport balls and images.

The challenge was very interesting, and it started with the storyboard. You can imagine how complicated it is to coordinate the action of 16 people passing stuffs with their webcam neighbors, from bottom to top, right to left, left to right, top to bottom… But Alex and Fred perfectly handled it.

Then the shooting was quite easy, all the actors understood very well what they had to do. All the more that 3 people from Wedovideo played in this video: Tomoko, Miki and me. Alex shot with the Panasonic HDV 200 on green screen and also on blue screen when the actor had a green t-shirt and vice-versa. The boards (hand-made) you see on the picture are used for the tracking, in order to put any image on it.

The result is:

mosaicedited

But that’s only one video out of 16. Obtaining this result by tracking the image on the board and adding the background was not the difficult part of the post-production. The hardest part of the editing was to have all the 16 videos coordinated, especially when one people passes an object to his neighbor, and receives an other one. But Alex perfectly managed it!

The video will be available soon on our website, and you will appreciate the music, tailor-made for it by Davy Bergier, a French composer and singer based in Tokyo, and working with Only Music.

Here is an overview of the introduction of the video, when all the people say hello to the world from their webcam:

Toshiba TG O1 CV presentation shooting

Wednesday April 21st, 2010 by marie

Today let’s talk about an interesting shooting project. A few months ago, we were hired by Toshiba to work on the video presentation of one of their new product designed to be a competitor of the iPhone.

The objective of the video was to show the functionalities of the phone in a very didactic and easy to understand way. That’s why it was decided to show only the phone and its user hand on close-up in the video. It implied to use some special shoot techniques to offer the best results.

The first problem was light. We needed to build a home-made studio to shoot the video. For budget matters we decided to build it by ourselves and to host it in our office. We needed to create a separate space with constant lighting and white screen to avoid light reflexion on the phone screen.

Here is an outside view of the shooting box:

And there, an inside view of the shooting box at the rehearsal time:

The second difficulty of the shooting was the image’s definition. As we wanted to do a high-quality close-up video of the phone we decided to use a high definition RED camera. The other main advantage of the RED camera is that its definition level is utterly helpful at the editing step of the project.

Here is a close up of the RED Camera during the preparation of the shooting:

However, the main challenge was coordination. As I told you, in the final video only one hand had to manipulate the phone. It means that the hand model had to be be inside the shooting box yielding her hand while making the necessary in order not to appear on the screen while manipulating the phone. That can become quite painful if you consider trying to open a phone with only one hand.

It is also complicated for the people outside the shooting box. The problem was that we had to put only the camera objective in the box.

Everyone must have a question. How could we check what was happening inside the box??? You know RED Cameras are quite handy because they are set-up to be used with a large-scale high definition monitor for color rending… The result is this:

and here is a happy producer satisfied by the shooting result…

Shooting in Beijing with Xu Jing Lei for GLS China Launch

Friday April 9th, 2010 by marie

This week Alex, Ivan and Alain went to China for a special shooting.

They shot the famous Chinese actress Xu Jing Lei for the video we will realize for the launch of Glamour Sales China on April, 27th in Shanghai.

The shooting was in a big studio in north Beijing. The studio is not located in the castle you see on the last picture, but the castle is actually the hotel where Alex, Ivan and Alain slept. This is an exact reproduction of the historic French castle Château Lafite, a wine estate owned by the Rothschild family in the area of Bordeaux. Mr Chang, a Chinese billionaire loved this castle, thus he simply decided to have an exact copy of it, from the architecture to the gardens and the statues, but decorated with the Chinese taste.

Alex directed the shooting and shot with the Canon 5D Mark II and Ivan operated the RED ONE camera. The shooting lasted one day and went very well, very good cooperation with Xu Jing Lei and her personal photographer.

Golf course Shooting and RED ONE camera

Thursday March 25th, 2010 by marie

redToday, let’s talk about a shooting we had recently and which was totally new for us: a shooting of a professional golf player, Yohei Haga, on the Lakewood golf course in Kanagawa, Tokyo.

First, why did we do that? Because it’s a nice challenge, because we like golf. That’s not false. But the main reason is that one of our client needs a video for its Marketing Division Kick-off event. Golf theme was chosen for this internal event, as our client considers that marketing strategy is very close to the golf playing strategy. Setting goals and means to reach them, patience and self-confidence… The purpose of the video is to show a strategic meeting in the head offices, and the results on the course.

There were then 2 parts to shoot. The meeting at the client’s office, with a Panasonic HVX 200, which was very classical and easy for us. Even if it was very hot in the very small room with no window we had to shoot in. I was nicely surprised about the six actors, all senior executives of the company. Before going there, I thought they would be uptight and that it would be difficult for them to go along with the shooting. But I was totally wrong! They were very interested, played the game very well and enjoyed it.

But the most interesting is the shooting of the professional golf player on the course with a RED ONE camera. Alex directed the shooting and Ivan (http://twitter.com/ivankovax) , from Visceralpsyche (http://www.visceralpsyche.com/en/index.html) operated the RED cam. Shooting with RED ONE camera takes more time than with a regular camera, but the result is really great. In fact, the RED ONE has a wider resolution (4K) which enabled us to get a great image of the golf course vast scene. Moreover, its special slow motion, 5 times slower than with regular cameras, gives a more detailed footage on the golf swing scene.

Shooting at the golf course was a great experience as we had vast scene and beautiful colors of the nature. By using RED ONE and thanks to Ivan’s great experience operating it, we expressed the advantage of shooting at this location.
